New Zealand boasts a diverse array of geothermal features including bubbling mud pools, mud pots, mud volcanoes, steaming fumaroles, erupting geysers and colorful sinter terraces. Many surface features, especially in remote areas, are either undocumented or poorly documented.

Through extensive observations, we have compiled a collection of interesting and unique geothermal features, accompanied by scientific explanations. To read about each feature, click on the images below. Our documentation currently includes over 500 features, and we will continue to expand this list as time allows. These features are situated in locations that are remote and difficult to access and many are accessible only with landowner permission.
