The fried egg

This striking “fried egg” formation is, in fact, a geothermal marvel. The white, fractured surface is composed of mineral-laden clay, its cracked appearance a result of dry conditions/low rainfall. The depression originated from hydrothermal activity, wherein upwelling hot water and gases weakened the surface crust, creating a small vent. The yellow deposit in the center is sulphur, which likely precipitated from hydrogen sulfide gas released from the geothermal system below. When H₂S reaches the surface and contacts oxygen, it can oxidise to form elemental sulphur.
