Spain Volcanoes

Spain, despite its sunny image, has a fiery side with significant volcanic activity concentrated in the Canary Islands. This archipelago, off the coast of Africa, boasts a variety of volcanic landscapes, from the towering Teide volcano on Tenerife (Spain’s highest peak) to the dramatic volcanic fields of Lanzarote. The Canary Islands owe their very existence to volcanic eruptions, and recent activity, like the 2021 eruption on La Palma, serves as a reminder of the powerful forces shaping these islands. While mainland Spain also has volcanic zones, such as the Garrotxa Volcanic Field in Catalonia with its dormant cinder cones and lava flows, the Canary Islands remain the heart of Spain’s volcanic activity.
