Mount Teide

Mount Teide, a stratovolcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is a complex volcanic structure formed by multiple eruptions over millions of years. It is composed mainly of basaltic lavas and pyroclastic material. Teide’s current cone sits within the remains of a much larger, ancient volcanic structure. The volcano’s last eruption occurred in 1909. Teide remains active, with ongoing fumarolic activity and geothermal anomalies. Scientists continue to monitor Teide closely, studying its seismicity, gas emissions, and ground deformation.

Mount Teide’s Eruptive History

Year Eruptive Activity Summary
~170,000 BP Formation of Las Cañadas caldera through massive explosive eruptions, resulting in the collapse of a previous volcanic edifice.
~2,000 BP Explosive eruption from Montaña Blanca, producing pyroclastic flows and ashfall.
850 AD Last summit eruption, characterized by effusive lava flows. The “Lavas Negras” (black lavas) from this eruption cover a significant portion of Teide’s flanks.
1430 Historical records are scarce, but indigenous accounts suggest an eruption, likely from a vent on the flanks of the volcano.
1704-1705 Fissure eruption with three main emission centers: Fasnia, Siete Fuentes, and Volcán de las Arenas. This eruption produced significant lava flows.
1706 Eruption of Montaña Negra, a vent on the northwestern rift. Lava flows from this eruption reached the coast, causing significant damage to the town of Garachico.
1798 Eruption of Pico Viejo (Chahorra), a secondary cone on the western flank of Teide. This eruption lasted three months and produced extensive lava flows.
1909 Last eruption to date, from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern rift. This eruption was characterized by Strombolian activity and lava flows.
