Kuirau Park is centrally located in Rotorua City. It is part of the wider Rotorua Geothermal System and features numerous pools of hot springs and boiling mud. The main attraction is Kuirau Lake with temperatures ranging between 40-50 degrees. In 2001 a hydrothermal eruption occurred in the park – the largest since 1966. Ejecta rose up to 100m high and left a crater 10m wide. In 2016, another eruption occurred sending mud 15m high. In 2022, a fumarole opened up on Lake road, erupting steam and mud.
