Volcanic earthquakes beneath the Crater Lake of Ruapehu

GNS have just issued a Volcano Alert Bulletin, warning of a swarm of earthquakes occuring directly beneath the Crater Lake of Mt Ruapehu. The Crate Lake temperature has also risen from 25 °C to 40 °C, however such increases have been observed previously without any eruptive activity. No other changes have been recorded (volcanic gas, lake chemistry or lake overflow).

GNS are uncertain of the implications of these recent observations and the alert level remains unchanged (currently at 1).
