Aurora Tool Overview

This project provides a real-time aurora notification system using data from the DSCOVR and ACE satellites at the Sun-Earth L1 point, verified by ground-based magnetometers. It provides accurate, location-based aurora predictions up to an hour ahead, surpassing the limits of current methods.

Evolution & Feature Roadmap:

● V1.0 (Proof of Concept): Core data processing established.
● V1.1 (Current): User interface with customisable notifications and templates.
● V1.2 (ETA May 2025): Enhanced notification verification through magnetometer data integration.
● V2.0 (ETA Q3 2025): Migration to dedicated iPhone and Android apps.

V1.1: Launch of new user interface, with
customisable notifications and templates.

V1.1 delivers a major upgrade with a new user interface for creating custom aurora notifications. Users can personalise these notifications using any parameters or choose from predefined templates based on location and other relevant data.

A Note on Beta: As we refine the experience, please be aware that this is a beta version, and occasional hiccups may occur. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us make it the best it can be!

The home screen displays real-time magnetic and plasma data. You can create custom notifications based on any of this data, including combined parameters. Data updates occur every minute.

To set up a notification, click on the “Notifications” tab and select “New Notification” Enter the Notification Title, the Subject and Body. You can use any variables below should you wish to include data within the notification (see the example below). Select NEXT to “Rule”.

Now, you’ll need to select the Rule type for your notification. You can either pick a quick-start pre-defined template OR create a custom notification tailored to your specific needs.

Setting up notifications is easy with our pre-defined templates. You’ll find many options, mostly organised by location, that require no specialised understanding of aurora parameters. Our templates are defined by leading systems and validated through peer review. Location templates are limited to New Zealand at this time.

You can also choose “Custom” to build your own rules using any single parameter or combination of parameters.

  1. Field: Choose the specific data you want to monitor for your notification. Select from any of the available parameters.
  2. Compare Type: Decide what kind of comparison to make:
    1. IF ‘new’: Trigger the notification based on the very latest data reading.
    2. ABS(‘old’ – ‘new’): Trigger the notification when there’s a significant change in the data between the last two readings – perfect for catching sudden events like shocks.
  3. Sign: Set the logical condition for your notification:
    1. = (Equal to)
    2. != (Not equal to)
    3. > (Greater than)
    4. < (Less than)
  4. Value: Enter the specific value you want to compare against.

You can add more conditions to your notification using either the AND or OR logic. Select NEXT to “Recipients”

Next, specify who should receive this notification. By default, we’ll send notifications to your registered email address. To add other recipients, you’ll first need to set them up in the “Contacts” tab.

Click Create to finalise and activate your notification. You’re all set!

You can easily manage your existing notifications under the “Notifications” tab. There, you can turn them on or off, edit their settings, or delete them entirely.

Feature roadmap:

There are two major feature rollouts in the pipeline.

  • V1.2 (ETA May): Enhanced notification verification through magnetometer data integration. After an aurora notification is sent, we’ll follow up with a verification notification based on real-time magnetometer readings to confirm its arrival. You’ll also find live magnetometer data available within the tool itself.
  • V2.0 (ETA Q3): Migration to dedicated iPhone and Android apps. While currently a web-based tool, we’re also developing dedicated iPhone and Android apps that will be available alongside this web version.
