Dropping (and frying) my GoPro in a lava lake

During my last Volcanic Expedition (led by Geoff Mackley) to Ambrym Island, we stumbled across a new lava lake. Unlike Marum and Benbow, we could hear the roaring lake below, but couldn’t see it. So, with a 100 meters of wire, we attached my GoPro and lowered it down.

While the lava lake was a further 100m below, the heat was enough to kill the camera.
