Ambrym Volcano Eruption

Ambrym Volcano in Vanuatu is currently exhibiting heightened volcanic activity, marked by an eruption within the Benbow crater. This eruption is characterised by the detection of multiple thermal anomalies, with the most recent recording a substantial energy output of 621 MW (High). This reading surpasses the intensity observed in eruptions following the formation of the lava lake, indicating a potentially more powerful eruptive phase.

Further signs of heightened activity include a continuous ash plume rising to an altitude of approximately 2 kilometers. This plume poses a potential hazard to aviation and surrounding communities. Additionally, a notable increase in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions has been detected.

Currently, the eruption appears confined to within the Benbow crater.
