Motutapu Island Circumnavigation

Not only are we slowly walking the entire coastline of New Zealand. we’re also circumnavigating a number of islands along the way. We’ve nearly completed Waiheke and have already circumnavigated Rakino, Motuora and Rangitoto. This weekend we ticked off Motutapu.

What struck us the most is how sharply the island divides into two contrasting halves. The northern section is slow going, with frequent climbs and the odd swim thrown in. The coastline is rugged and unforgiving..,but it’s also the most beautiful, with stunning chert folds and a string of sea caves to explore. The southern section offers a welcome change of pace, with easier terrain and some wonderful concretions embedded in the sandstone.

Difficult rocky coastline in the north

Wonderful sea arch – a must to swim through

A hole through the wall, making for easy passage

Some of the sea caves we explored – all on the northern coastline

Chert fold

Concretions on the southern coastline
