Motukorea Browns Island is one the best preserved volcanoes in the Auckland Volcanic Field. It erupted 25,000 years ago when the sea level was significantly lower than the present day. Typical of Auckland volcanoes, Motukorea Browns Island started as a wet eruption before shifting to dry. During this phase, a tuff ring was built. The island has several scoria cones.
