Lake Pupuke is one of the oldest volcanoes in Auckland, having erupted 193,000 years ago. It is a heart-shaped explosion crater and is now a fresh water lake. Lava flows from Pupuke were significant, enveloping a nearby kauri forest and creating tree moulds which can be seen today.
