Mount Shindake is a classic, active stratovolcano located on the island of Kuchinoerabu in southern Japan. The volcano has erupted several times and in 2015, the main crater erupted, prompting a level 5 alert level. Shindake is a cone-shaped volcano with alternating layers of fragmented deposit and lava flows.

2024: Alert Level 2 – Restless. Seismic activity continues to be recorded near the crater.
Mount Shindake’s Eruptive History
1976 | Eruption producing an ash column to 3000m. |
1996 | Increased seismicity. 91 earthquakes occurred in April 1996. |
2008 | Alert level increased from 1-2 due to increased seismicity and ground inflation. |
2014 | August – Modest eruption, prompting the alert level to be increased. |
2015 | A red glow was observed with steam plumes. On May 29, a large phreatomagmatic eruption produced a large ash plume to over 9km. Pyroclastic flows were recorded in almost all directions from the crater. JMA raised the Volcanic Alert Level to 5. |
2019 | A number of small eruptions occurred. Pyroclastic flows reached 2km. |
2024 | Alert Level 2 – Restless. Seismic activity continues to be recorded near the crater. |
