Mount Shindake

 

Mount Shindake is a classic, active stratovolcano located on the island of Kuchinoerabu in southern Japan. The volcano has erupted several times and in 2015, the main crater erupted, prompting a level 5 alert level. Shindake is a cone-shaped volcano with alternating layers of fragmented deposit and lava flows.

2024: Alert Level 2 – Restless. Seismic activity continues to be recorded near the crater.

 

Mount Shindake’s Eruptive History

1976 Eruption producing an ash column to 3000m.
1996 Increased seismicity. 91 earthquakes occurred in April 1996.
2008 Alert level increased from 1-2 due to increased seismicity and ground inflation.
2014 August – Modest eruption, prompting the alert level to be increased.
2015 A red glow was observed with steam plumes. On May 29, a large phreatomagmatic eruption produced a large ash plume to over 9km. Pyroclastic flows were recorded in almost all directions from the crater. JMA raised the Volcanic Alert Level to 5.
2019 A number of small eruptions occurred. Pyroclastic flows reached 2km.
2024 Alert Level 2 – Restless. Seismic activity continues to be recorded near the crater.
