Barren Island

 

Barren Island is located in the Andaman Sea. Its first recorded activity was in 1787 and it is the only active volcano in South Asia. Barren Island is said to have originated from primitive volcanic cone remains.

2024 April 2024: Eruptions continue, producing impressive fire fountaining and lava flows.
2023 May 2023: Eruptions continue. VAAC Darwin issued a bulletin, reporting ash to almost 5000m.
2022 Eruptions continue.
2020 Eruptions continue with numerous VAAC bulletins.
2017 Ongoing, intermittent eruptive activity (including strombolian eruptions and lava flows) observed.
2013 Large eruption plume reaching 6,000m
2005-6 Large Strombolian eruptions
1994-5 Fire fountaining, lava flows reaching the ocean.
