- Coca Cola Lake
Don’t be confused with Lake Rotopokaka, affectionately nicknamed “Coca-Cola Lake,” in New Zealand’s Far North District. This lake has the distinctive “Coca-Cola” water, but is much more stunning with large steep sand dunes that cascade steeply down into the dark tannin water. It’s also extremely remote, taking a day’s hike to get to.
Its distinctive dark brown color, reminiscent of the popular beverage, comes from the tannins and peat found in the surrounding vegetation. While the lake’s appearance might seem dirty, it is completely safe to swim in.
