- Caves of Taranaki
The coastline around Taranaki and Tongapōrutu, located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, is home to a series of remarkable sea caves and rock formations. These caves penetrate deep into the cliffside, with some extending over 70 meters inward. Each cave boasts unique characteristics, from intricate rock formations to varying sizes and shapes. In certain areas, the relentless forces of nature have caused partial ceiling collapses, creating dramatic skylights that allow shafts of sunlight to pierce the darkness below.
Whilst some of the coastline is easily accessible, much of it remains challenging to reach and requires careful planning of the tides, land permissions and climbing equipment to access.
