New eruption underway in Reykjanes

A volcanic eruption began near Grindavík, Iceland on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at approximately 11:14 PM local time. This marks the sixth eruption in the area this year, with the fissure extending northeast over two kilometers. The eruption occurred in the Sundhnúkur crater row, north of Grindavík, an area that has seen repeated volcanic activity throughout 2024. Lava flow is primarily moving westward, and there are currently no indications of lava flowing southward toward Grindavík.

This latest eruption follows a period of relative calm in the region, with the previous eruption ending in early September. While the eruption is being closely monitored by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, early reports suggest it is less extensive than previous events in 2024. Scientists are carefully tracking the lava flow and gas emissions, working to assess the potential impact on surrounding areas.

Strong northerly winds are helping to carry gas emissions southward, over Grindavík and the ocean. As a precaution, the Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal spa in the area, has been closed temporarily.
