Raung is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. It is located on the island of Java. Raung is a 3332m high unvegetated stratovolcano with a 2 km caldera. It is the tallest volcano of its kind and has recorded at least six deadly eruptions.

2024: December: Raung Volcano in Indonesia has erupted, prompting the Darwin VAAC to issue an ash advisory. The eruption has reached a height of 4,000 meters, with predominantly white ash drifting eastward towards Bali. There is also volcanic tremor, with a maximum recorded amplitude of 9 mm on seismograms.
Raung’s Eruptive History
| 1990 | Minor, but frequent eruptions. |
| 1997 | Eruption with ash plume to 5km. Frequent eruptions ongoing, however gradually ceased. |
| 2000 | After three years of little activity, Raung erupted again. |
| 2002 | Eruptions with a plume reaching almost 5km. |
| 2004 | Thermal anomalies recorded, however they were put down to forest fires. |
| 2007 | Darwin VAAC reported multiple ash plumes to 4.6km. |
| 2008 | Observed eruptions producing plumes to almost 5km. |
| 2013-15 | Increased seismicity and multiple steam plumes observed. Alert Level increase to 2. Multiple ash eruptions and thermal anomalies in July 2015. Lava active in the crater – incandescent glow noted at night. |
| 2016 | White plumes observed rising, however seismicity/activity began to decline. |
| 2022 | Raung Erupts! On July 27, Raung erupted producing a small ash plume to 1.5km. |
| 2023 | Minor activity at this time. A small steam/gas eruption was recorded in Dec 2023. |
