This vibrant green, circular rock pool is carved into the rugged, volcanic coastline along a very remote stretch of South Island coastline. It formed through weathering and erosion, where high-energy waves and trapped pebbles ground down hollows in the basalt rock over many years.

Unlike lower pools that are regularly flushed by the incoming tide, this one sits high enough on the shoreline to be reached only by storm surges. This isolation creates a stable, sun-drenched environment that allows the bright green algae to thrive undisturbed.
