Auckland Domain Volcano is a large explosion crater, having erupted approximately 100,000 years ago. It is surrounded by a long tuff ring. At the center of the crater is a small scoria coned named Pukekaroro. The crater was once a lava lake. The western side of this lava lake collapsed, forming a fresh water lake. Today, much of the land has been reclaimed and turned into sports fields.
